RIP Neal Parker

by Darkside 15. June 2010 16:07

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. -- Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Neal Parker, 58, from Millville, N.J., crashed today at a high rate of speed in the shutdown area during qualifying for the NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park and was pronounced dead.

NHRA officials and the New Jersey State Police are investigating the accident.

Neal had a great run and the parachute(s) did not deploy after the run, and the car appeared like it was W.O.T (for a good period) after the 1/4 mile. It did appear that a chute (pilot chute) did start to deploy just before the car hit the sand trap, after that point all there was to see was dust and debris.
The preliminary report was that Neal had died of massive head injuries. The speculation that he had suffered some sort of debilitating medical issue during the run seems to be a very strong possibility.

To answer some of your question about the 60 gal tests.

by Darkside 9. May 2010 01:16

Leaving the basic car the same just changing the tune up.

Measured 4.35 at 1000 with no speed clocks and 5.10 at 288 FROM THE COMP.

Force two runs and Tim three.

At loc up it pulls the motor to its knees(5500)and then the car is too heavy or the motor too weak (maybe both) to accelerate much.

nhra is PROBABLY done with this deal and next will be a SEALED psi pop off allowing the full 60/65 gal at any rpm but will bleed of above that.

This would have about 12 more gals during the Tug.

The teams could run their current pumps with this psi relief-----This is almost just a SEALED BDK valve.

Tim Wilkerson and John Force participated in the first smaller fuel pump test session

by Darkside 5. May 2010 06:14

Tim Wilkerson and John Force participated in the first test session to determine if a smalller fuel pump of 65 gallons per minute might be the key to efficiently slowing the premiere nitro divisions.
Judging whether this is the proper route to go remains to be seen, but Wilkerson was confident Monday’s test wasn’t a failure.
“I think it went pretty well,” said Wilkerson, driving home from the Monday test session following the NHRA Midwest Nationals in St. Louis. “There are some discussions which will happen in the future between us, Dan Olson and Austin Coil to try and make some rational decisions.
“It’s really too early for people to draw conclusions about this, oh yeah. It’s just like the small engine test, it’s just going to take some time.”
Force went as quick as a 4.36 and Wilkerson admits he was on a similar run but lifted early for no significant reason. Their runs were within .002 of one another at half-track.
Wilkerson told Attitude’s CompetitionPlus.com his team and Force’s are exploring different avenues and after a period of time will determine which one works the best.
“There was no sense in us doing the same thing,” Wilkerson explained. “When you go in two different directions, it just increases your chances of finding the right solution. It was unbelievable how close we were in going different directions.”
One team reportedly pursued blower combinations while the other worked on compression.
“Dan and I and Zippy [Mike Neff] talked every run,” Wilkerson said. “We came to the conclusion this will need more runs. It wasn’t a bad test. It just wasn’t fast. Then again, you’re not going to run that fast … the thing is missing half the gas.”
In an article by Attitude’s CompetitionPlus.com, many of the leading crew chiefs suggested the best route to slow the nitro cars down was to limit the air coming into the engine instead of the fuel. Wilkerson confirmed the teams had to reduce the amount of air coming into the engine to make it work properly.
Those same crew chiefs also said the smaller fuel pump greatly reduced the margin for tuning error.
“We made five runs on Monday,” Wilkerson confirmed. “We’ll likely resume in Joliet. We’ll go from there.”

mandate a spec fuel pump for Top Fuel and Funny Car

by Darkside 5. May 2010 05:59

From DRO

I have received information from very reliable sources in the last few days, information that I believe is true that very shortly maybe as soon as June 1 that the NHRA is going to mandate at the least a spec fuel pump for Top Fuel and Funny Car effective January 1, 2011.

Depending on whom you talk to, the rule will be a maximum 55-gallon pump for Funny Cars and a 60-gallon for the Top Fuel cars or 60 for the floppers and 65 for the fuelers.

Either way it goes, the result is inevitable: those cars are going to slow down. And while there may still be explosions, they will be significantly smaller explosions than those we see incurred with the use of the current 100-gallon per minute pumps.

Bob Stange --- with the latest Top Fuel Bolt Pattern update.

by Darkside 25. April 2010 23:47

Bob Stange --- with the latest Top Fuel Bolt Pattern update.
Their new hubs will have a 11/16" "nail" type head with serations pressed into the new hubs.
Anyone familiar with a Lenco floater hub will recognize this system. A great improvment over what's out there now. No steps in the stud.
Yes, they are working with Weld and Sander (who most do not know was responsible for the American Racing wheel)
who will produce a wheel center to spec. to match the new 1/2" deep driving lug pattern between the studs in the new Strange hub.
Remember earlier thread on this?
They have many hours of "pull tests" on the studs, and came up with 200 lbs.
torque numbers by using a 7075 Alum. nut with a crimped steel swivel washer as used in aircraft for high torque.
They did destructive tests on the nut/stud combo and passed 600 lbs., failure was 640 lbs.
I asked if the hub would be hard anodized, he said no. Anyone who ever studied metal transfer (owned a Donovan  )
has seen buildup, and I worry that the "tire grunt" will hit the lug with a body grinder to get the wheel on easy because of 60-75 minute round rule. He agreed.
The new system will have a mandatory two year factory inspection of all related parts, which I think is necessary. (I personally know of 1 rearend that has had 7 chassis ahead of it without ever being inspected) All parts will be inspected by an outside sorce.
Bob was concerned about his friend Chrisman who has his own issues to solve with his two piece studs, that are retained into the hub with a 5/16" cap screw into the back of the stud. Lab test pulled studs at 160 lbs. torque.
I'm sure he will offer help as they are "friends".
Maybe this is overkill, but maybe not!

Also, for legal reasons, this will be an "option" to the standard "no lug"
system, but with the new style studs @ 200 lbs.torque. If there is another failure, the user had a choice.

NHRA to Race Four-Wide in Charlotte in 2011

by Darkside 18. April 2010 19:11

LAS VEGAS -- NHRA announced today that the 2011 NHRA Four Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway will once again feature four-wide racing in all four professional categories. The spring event in Charlotte will be the only race on the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule that will showcase four-wide racing.

"Few would argue the amount of attention the four-wide race received leading up to and even following the event from our fans, racers and the media," said Tom Compton, president, NHRA. "The spectacle of four-wide racing is nothing short of breathtaking and we want to build on that and share the four-wide experience with our fans once again in 2011."

Based on feedback from the fans, the racing community and sponsors, NHRA is planning to improve upon the format and make adjustments to enhance the experience for everyone. Areas under review include the experience on-site for the fans, improving television for fans watching at home, maximizing sponsor value, and working with the race teams on operational functions including the staging process.

letter sent from PRO to NHRA president

by Darkside 16. April 2010 05:52

Tuesday, 06 April 2010

The Professional Racers Owners Organization has sent a letter to Tom Compton saying its members will no longer race the 4-wide format if points are on the line.

The following letter was sent from PRO to NHRA president Tom Compton.

Dear Tom,

The PRO Board of Directors would like to applaud the efforts of Bruton Smith and his staff for consistently providing top-notch facilities for race teams, and fans alike. The tracks at Bristol, Charlotte, Las Vegas, and Sonoma are by far the very best in the country. We also acknowledge his efforts to increase awareness and visibility for our sport by holding a one- of-a-kind, 4-wide drag racing event at zMax Dragway.

We are certainly indebted to him for all his efforts to help elevate our sport. However, we are not in agreement that a 4-wide national event is in the best interest of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

Over the course of the Charlotte race weekend, the PRO Board of Directors conducted a survey of PRO member and non-member team owners and drivers in the Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock classes. With the exception of a few race teams who do not race a full schedule, we collected responses to the question "Do you want to participate in a 4-wide national event for points again?" The results were as follows:

60 NO - 3 YES

Although there may have been a perceived value potential of such an event, it did not turn out that way. There are several issues of concern, which are in no way a reflection of the racing facilities or Bruton Smith himself.

Specifically, we are concerned about the following:

1.) Safety first - we believe that the probability of an accident is greatly increased while safety is decreased.

2.) Confusion – there was total confusion among drivers, teams and fans.

- There were numerous complaints from race teams, particularly on starting line procedures, which cost more than a few teams successful runs.

- Fans specifically commented that there was too much going on at the starting line and did not know what to watch. It was impossible to focus on the 4 cars. The biggest complaint was that races were very hard to follow as everything happened too quickly and all at once.

3.) Sponsorship identification – The wide camera angle for television coverage caused the race cars to appear so small that they resembled toy cars; ad, sponsorship identification was virtually non-existent.

4.) Circus like atmosphere – We felt that the event turned into novelty like event, similar to that of the WWE, rather than a race for points towards the NHRA World Championship.

While we understand that there may be a place for 4-wide drag racing at zMax Dragway, the overwhelming majority of our racing community feel that it is not in the best interest of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

Therefore, The PRO Board of Directors would like you to know that we will not participate in a 4-wide national event involving points again. We feel doing so would be detrimental to the sport of NHRA Championship Drag Racing.

The PRO board however, is not opposed to discussing the possibility of a 4-wide exhibition or all-star race in the future.

We know these are difficult times for our sport; however, we are certain you would agree that maintaining the integrity of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series and its sponsors is of utmost concern. Therefore, we feel it is important that we take this stance.

Please feel free to contact our board administrator, Michelle Domagala, should you wish to discuss these issues with the entire board.

Sincerely,

The PRO Board of Directors
